Isles of CampaniaIsles of Campania

Otherwise known as the Flegrean (or Partenopean) Isles, those in the bay of Naples. Ischia, Vivara, Procida and Nisida.

The name derives from the fact they belong to the geological area of the Flegrean Fields: The Isle of Capri, even though located in the Bay of Naples, is not generally included in the Flegrean Arcipelago, as it belongs to another geological area.

In the classic era, the Flegrean Isles (in Greek) were called Pithecussae, otherwise known as the Isles of the Monkeys. Mythology, (of the Greek origin), tells of a couple of robbers from Efeso, making fun of Zeus, and were punished by turning them into monkeys thus confining them to the islands of Aenaria ( Ischia) and Prochyta (Procida).

Another myth talks of Zeus himself fighting two Titans, (Tifeo and Mimante), the fight ending with defeat of the Titans, who were duly punished by being buried under two massive rocks- Tifeo under Ischia and Mirante under Procida.

This version could be a possible answer of the ancient Greeks to the mystery( for them) of the volcanic activity of the area; that the lands changed as a result of constant divine intervention.

Leaving aside myths, the Flegrean fields are amongst the most beautiful and certainly the most famous in the Mediterranean, with their marvellous coves, the characteristic ports and a unique landscape.

An unforgettable sailing experience whether in a sail or motor boat charter.
